Dental Veneers

are thin, custom-made shells of porcelain or composite material bonded to the front of teeth to improve their appearance by correcting imperfections like chips, stains, misshapen teeth, or gaps.

They offer a long-lasting cosmetic solution, though porcelain veneers are generally more durable and stain-resistant than composite ones. The process involves a dentist preparing the tooth, taking impressions, and then affixing the custom-made veneer to the tooth’s surface.

Here’s a more detailed look at what veneers are used for

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment used to:

  • Conceal stains on discoloured teeth that cannot be whitened effectively.
  • Repair chipped or broken teeth by providing a seamless, tooth-coloured covering.
  • Correct the shape of teeth, including misshapen or unusually shaped teeth.
  • Close gaps between teeth for a more uniform smile.
  • Improve the alignment of slightly crooked teeth.

Types of veneers

  • Porcelain veneers: Thin, durable, and highly stain-resistant shells that offer a very natural look.
  • Composite veneers: Made from tooth-coloured resin material, these are typically less expensive and can sometimes be placed in a single visit.

Benefits

  • Aesthetic improvement: They provide a brighter, more uniform, and attractive smile.
  • Durability: Porcelain veneers can last for many years with proper care.
  • Stain resistance: Porcelain veneers are less likely to become discoloured than natural teeth.

Journey

Patient Journey

What is the process?

Step 1/2:

Some of the shiny outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed to ensure the veneer can be bonded permanently and put in place later. The amount of enamel removed is minimal and will be equal to the thickness of the veneer to be fitted, ensuring the tooth remains the same size. A local anaesthetic (injection) may be used to ensure no discomfort, but often this is not necessary. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist will take an impression of it.

This will be given to the dental technician, along with any other necessary information to create the veneer. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to ensure that the veneer will look entirely natural.

Inlays and Onlays

Step 2/2:

A veneer typically requires at least two visits: the first to prepare the tooth and match the shade, and the second to fit it. Before bonding it in place, your dentist will show you the veneer on your tooth to ensure you are satisfied with it. Bonding a veneer in place is accomplished with a special adhesive that holds it firmly in place on the tooth.

Appointment 2 - Tooth preparation:

A very small amount of enamel may be removed from the tooth’s surface to make room for the veneer. A dental impression or scan is taken to create a custom-made veneer that matches the size, shape, and colour of your other teeth. Before you leave, we’ll securely fit a custom-made temporary whilst your bespoke veneer(s) are being created by our skilled technicians.

Appointment 3 - Placement:

The permanent veneer is bonded to the front of the tooth.
