Did you know that on May 13th, National Smile Month 2019 officially begins? This year, the mission is simple – to get people across the UK and beyond smiling with confidence. So what exactly is National Smile Month and how can you get involved? Here’s all you need to know.

What is National Smile Month?

National smile month is an annual campaign that is held throughout the United Kingdom to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene. Dating back to 1979, when it was first held as National Smile Week, it is now the UK’s largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health. The campaign encourages dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare – to join in and help educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improve the quality of smiles all around the world.

Who organises National Smile Month?

National Smile Month is organised by the Oral Health Foundation, an independent charity (not for profit) dedicated to improving oral health and wellbeing around the world. For more than 45 years they have provided expert, independent and impartial advice on all aspects of oral health directly to those who need it most. The charity works closely with governments, dental and health professionals, manufacturers, the dental trade, national and local agencies and the public, to achieve their mission of addressing the inequalities which exist in oral health, changing people’s lives for the better.

How can I get involved with National Smile Month?

Anybody can get involved in National Smile Month! The best way to get involved is to listen to the message and make simple, positive changes to your lifestyle and that of your family. The three key messages are simple –

• Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.
• Cut down on how much sugary food and drink you have, and how often you have them.
• Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend
  Dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges, workplaces and other establishments with an interest in good oral healthcare will also be joining forces with the Oral Health Foundation to help educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improve the quality of smiles all around the world – so look out for activities and events going on around you and show your support.If you haven’t had a checkup with your dentist in the last 6-12 months, then be sure to give your dentist a call and get yourself booked in for an appointment.
