Having your wisdom teeth removed is no laughing matter, but a new pain-relieving face mask can at least reduce the discomfort felt by patients following oral surgery, making the whole process far less unpleasant than it has been in the past.
After a recent operation to remove all four of his wisdom teeth, TV star Joey Essex posted a series of pictures on Instagram that showed him wearing the plastic mask, which helps relieve dental pain and swelling by cooling the affected tissues.
The mask fits over the jaw and cheeks, and contains pockets that are pumped full of chilled water, which is circulated to keep the temperature low. According to Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association, the cooling effect of the mask may also assist with healing, and is a relatively low-cost treatment that could be highly beneficial to patients.
